Media investment: You must be deliberate to stay afloat — Precious Enyi, General Manager, VOPTV

Media investment: You must be deliberate to stay afloat — Precious Enyi, General Manager, VOPTV

Precious Enyi

A savvy broadcast communication journalist who’s media career started over two decades ago as a co-host for NTA children birthday show “Darlings of The Month”, Precious Enyi was appointed General Manager of Voice of the People Television recently.

Before she was appointed the pioneer General Manager of Voice of The People’s TV, she was a co-host of Wazobia TV’a flagship breakfast show “Gudu Morning Naija ‘’. She was also the host for VOP 90.3 FM’s drive time belt, (a sister radio station to VOP TV), where she analyzes political and trending conversations.

She was an independent producer/presenter in AIT Port Harcourt and treasure FM Port Harcourt before she became fully incorporated into Radio Nigeria’s Treasure FM.

Precious is very well rounded in the industry. She holds a degree in Theatre Arts as well as Criminology and Security Studies. In this interview, she speaks on the strategies, expectations and contributions as a General Manager.

Taking over as the General Manager of a television station, how do you feel?

I feel trapped but in a good way. I’ve always been a workaholic, very restless. I’ve never had to follow a single income path so I guess that already prepared me for the challenges of heading a television station and a new station at that. It’s been interesting having to deal with people (now I understand why former president Buhari said leading Nigerians is challenging), but I’m as dogged as they come, I’ve never had to do anything and fail at it so it’s been a worthy challenge and I am facing it squarely.

How do you intend to carry out operations in the face of the economy of the country?

This is the most challenging aspect of this journey, because I must be deliberate about cutting down on overhead cost, yet, I need the best of hands to actualize the dream of the station. You know the media investment is not immediately profitable, so one must be deliberate to ensure you stay afloat. So, I guess I had to be a typical Africa/Nigerian Mother to handle that.

Who are you targeting and how do you carve a niche for your organization in ensuring that you stay in business?

Voice of the People TV intends to live true to its name; we are a people’s first station both in our programming and presentation style. We are a news and news analysis station but not immediately overly formal (which is the conversational style), we discuss topical issues in a very understandable and simplified manner, incorporating languages that will make for easy understanding. Imagine discussing politics with a touch of Pidgin English like we do daily in our homes and offices, that’s the difference VOP is bringing to the game. We cater for all classes of citizens irrespective of social class, language or religion. We are the place to be for deep and intense conversations in politics, economy, sports, rare facts about African culture and history etc. We realize the need for a continuous political consciousness for Africans in Africans and in the Diaspora and what better way to deliver that than in a style that people can identify with.

As a General Manager, what level of experience are you bringing on board?

With over two decades of experience in the media/broadcast industry as a Radio and Television host, a film and television major in Theatre Arts, a criminologist, a certified Etiquette and Customer Service expert with experience in the corporate sector,  I am fully equipped for the task of a general Manager.

I started broadcasting as a co-host of a kiddies show in NTA Port Harcourt, then proceeded to produce and present my on show(an independent show)on AIT and NTA, while also a presenter with Radio Nigeria’s Treasure FM Port Harcourt, Radio One Lagos, Metro FM Lagos before my voluntary retirement from civil service.

I joined the AIM group in 2021 where I was the breakfast show host for Wazobia TV till July 2023.

Tell us your company’s operational system and the workability.

Voice of the People Television is a 21st Century media brand that gives a voice to not just the lowest, but all classes of the society in a competitive environment through the application of top notch contents and programs with the help of modern digital technology. VOP creates equality of representation, opinion and fairness in the global space.

The multi- ethnic structure of Nigeria has created diversities; we leverage on these diversities and unify it in telling the true African story while maintaining the ethics of the broadcast industry.

Beaming live from the heart of Lagos, with studios in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Benin and Onitsha, Nigeria , Voice of the People Television is a one- stop hub for media excellence.

Your experience in the Industry and the motivation behind your choice of discipline?

Anyone who is Radio Nigeria trained isn’t surprisingly a thoroughbred. My experience as a presenter, anchor, news reader and personal marketing skills has prepared me for this job already. My choice of career path is both divine and innate. You know as a child and young girl, anyone who hears me talk always thinks I should be a broadcast journalist and life systematically paved the way for the career path for me.

What challenges do you foresee?

Quality of human resources to work with may be an immediate perhaps remote challenge. There is a need to have people with equal energy and dedication to achieve set goals.

What deliberate efforts will you put in place to make your organization successful?

I am intentional about this challenge, and I intend to remain intentional to achieve and even surpass set goals.

What is your organization’s 5-point agenda and how would you say these agenda favour all women at all levels?

Our agenda is to have a media platform that will give a voice to all citizens within and outside the country. A voice to contribute on topical issues whether it is politics, governance, economy, among others.

We are poised to place Africa in its right position as a hub for the best contents through the application of factual, timely and unbiased reports and stories with the “People” as major stakeholders. So to achieve this, we have ensured the voices of Women are not left behind; we have programmes that make a case for women in leadership positions, including those that encourage inclusivity and gender equality in every sphere of life. We ensure that women of all classes are incorporated in our programming style to give them a voice, we had to even create an only female call-in line to give more women the opportunity to express themselves.

Tell us how your organization is wired especially when it comes to ensuring effective operation and delivery of purpose?

As a People’s first station and living true to our name, VOP ensures her audience is put first. We consistently engage with the people through our street reports, i-report features, two way communication during live shows (phone-in), among others. Look, Nigerians are becoming too politically aware to be consistently ignored, so VOP is here to bridge the gap. There’s a need for continuous political consciousness and we are here to inform the people appropriately and also ensure their voices are heard. This style transcends politics to other conversations, weather in sports, entertainment, economy/business among others; we use the same template for equal representation.
