NBA faults removal of fuel subsidy

Abuja (NAN) The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja chapter, says it is not in support of the proposed removal of subsidy on petroleum products.

The NBA Chairman, Mr Afam Osigwe, told newsmen in Abuja on Friday that the disadvantages of the proposed removal  far outweighed the advantages, as put forward by the government.

He warned that Nigerians would suffer unmanageable economic challenges, if government went ahead to actualise the plan.

“Although President Goodluck Jonathan says he is `still consulting’, he will have to explain to Nigerians details of what is expended on fuel subsidy.”

The NBA chairman advised President Jonathan to jettison the planned removal of subsidy, describing it as premature.

He said, “Our advice to the government is to tread softly on the issue. The removal of fuel subsidy is not the solution to the myriad of problems in Nigeria.

“It will likely have a ripple effect on the social and economic lives of the people.”

Osigwe called on the National Assembly to carefully examine the issue of removal of petroleum subsidy and listen to the voices of the people.
