Abuja – An Abuja Area Court on Wednesday adjourned to Dec. 12, ruling in a case of causing grievous hurt filed against a 31-year-old woman, Mrs Chioma Uka.

Mr Austin Ogbuabia, counsel to Uka had filed an oral application for bail before the court, after Uka pleaded not guilty to the charge and said that an accused was still innocent until proven guilty.

Ogbuabia pleaded with the court to grant his client bail saying: “she is a housewife and nursing mother and will not jump bail.’’

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Phillip Appollos, strongly opposed the application and said “the case is still under investigation and the offence is a serious one”.

“The victim is still lying critically ill in the hospital. She is unable to appear in court and the investigating Police officer is yet to obtain a word from her,” Appollos told the court.

He had earlier told the court that one Mr Osman Chika, who resides at Jabi, Abuja, had reported the accused to the police on behalf of his sister Miss Ifeoma Chika.

The prosecutor said that on Nov. 29, Uka of same address had poured hot water on the face and breast of Ifeoma because of a mild quarrel they had.

He said that Uka committed the offence contrary to Section 247 of the Penal Code Law, but the accused pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Appollos prayed the court for an adjournment to enable the police complete investigation in the case.

Mr Abdul Mohammed, therefore, adjourned the case to Dec. 12, for ruling on the bail application. (NAN)
