ONITSHA—The people of Umerum community in Anyamelu local government area yesterday protested the non-payment of N2million paid monthly to communities in Anambra State by Governor Peter Obi for infrastructural development.

The placard-carrying protesters, comprising red cap chiefs, community leaders and youths, marched peacefully to Government House, Awka, to register their grievances.

Some of the placards read, “Governor Obi save us from Udemgba”; “Udemgba must go”; “Give us our share of money from Governor Obi.”

Addressing newsmen, the Chairman of the caretaker committee of the community, Chief Ben Eze-Agbogu, said they were at Government House to tell the governor that there was no crisis or factions in the town union executive to warrant the non-payment of their own N2million.

“Our protest today was to call on the state government not to pay the money to our former president general, Mr Johnson Udemgba who was removed on May 6 following a vote of no confidence on account of financial impropriety,” he said.

Agbogu alleged that Udemgba was removed from office for not only being fraudulent but was also not interested in the development of the community.

Other sins of Udemgb’s removal he said were that he had sacked community paid teachers without consulting the elders and stakeholders in the community as well as having direct dealings with Orient petroleum company without consulting the community.
