BENIN- policemen who were deployed to maintain peace at the premises of Federal Psychiatric Hospital Uselu, Benin City, have been withdrawn following the peace moves initiated by the Acting Chief Medical Director, CMD, of the hospital, Dr. George Eze.

It would be recalled that the crisis between the former management of the hospital, led by Dr (Mrs) Olabisi Ihenyen, and union members over unpaid allowances and certain reforms which the union members kicked against, created tension in the hospital which led to the deployment of policemen to the hospital.

It was learnt that when Dr. Eze took over last month, he ordered for the withdrawal of the policemen after he prevailed on the union members to embrace peace.

One of the union leaders, who craved anonymity, told Vanguard: “The acting CMD has made some promises and we have been talking. We have withdrawn the case from the police and we are happy policemen are no longer here.”

“However, there are other issues like the queries issued to our members by the former CMD which members of the dissolved board said should be withdrawn. That is yet to be done. The allowances that are owed to our members are yet to be paid. But we are glad there is peace.”
