Ogunmola wins silver in 400m

Tobi Ogunmola added a silver medal to Nigeria’s medal haul in the athletics event of the ongoing 10th All Africa Games in Maputo. He won the medal in the men’s 400 metres race.

Running in a strong field, the Nigerian athlete finished in a time of 45.82 seconds behind Sudanese star, Raba Yusuf who won gold in a time of 45.27.

Tobi’s feat was remarkable as he said he was happy winning silver at the Games. “Glory be to God as this was my first major race in the senior category,” he said.

Mark Kiproctich Mutai of Kenya came third, with a time of 46.52.

The Ondo State-born athlete said he earlier this year, participated at the World Junior championships in Canada where he also won a silver. “It is not easy gaduating to the senior category and start winning medals. I am happy,” he said.

He said his immediate plan was on the Olympics. “Yeah!, that is my immediate plan. I want to win something at the Olympics and that means to start planning from now.”

His compatriot, James Goday placed 5th in the race.

The women’s 400 meters race, was expectedly won by the  world champion from Botswana, Amanze Mucho who clocked 50.87 seconds. No Nigerian was near the medal range despite fielding three in the final.
