Family of murdered singer, Edo Attorney-General at war over suspects’ bail

By Simon Ebegbulem

BENIN – THE family of Erharuyi Ogbeide (aka Prof. Ukeke), a popular Benin singer, who was killed alongside his colleague and friend, Eghosa Idehen, at the residence of Eraruyi’s father in-law in Benin City, last year, has accused the Attorney-General of Edo State of alleged obstruction of justice by releasing the suspects who were in prison custody.

The father of the deceased, Dr. Uyi-Ekpen Ogbeide, who addressed newsmen in Benin City, alleged  in a letter to Governor Adams Oshiomhole that the Attorney-General was intimidating him with a libel suit, where he is claiming the sum of N25 million, adding that his zeal to uncover the killers of his eldest son had pitched him against the Attorney-General.

It will be recalled that the two popular Benin singers were murdered on March 9, 2010, at the residence of Ukeke’s father in-law, Chief Omorodion Olaye.

However, Obayuwana described the allegation of bribery against him as sad and untrue, adding that the matter was handled by the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, who found out that the evidence made available by the Police was not enough  to keep the suspects in prison.
