Asaba—COMMERCIAL banks in Kwale, Delta State, resumed operations Wednesday , after closing their doors to customers last week due to the sacking of the police station in the town and subsequent threat by robbers to attack them again.
Although the banks commenced operations, palpable fear still enveloped the town.
A cross section of residents interviewed called for security beef up, while some others want the police high command to carry out mass transfer of policemen in the town, noting that most of them (policemen) had spent several years there and want fresh hands in tackling the serious security crisis in the area.
According to Mr. Nelson Enumah, a lawyer, “we need a military base here. The situation is serious.”
At least two policemen were killed last week and several others wounded when a gang of armed robbers launched an attack on the police station in Kwale.
But the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Muka confirmed the death of only one policeman, promising that the command was on top of the security situation in the town.
The banks in the town while on forced holiday, complained that the robbers had allegedly written them, threatening to unleash another attack reminiscent of the May 18, raid in which the sum of N84 milli0n was stolen.
