NBC builds 6.5mw combined heat, power plants for Benin factory

By Franklin Alli
Nigeria Bottling Company PLC, a subsidiary of Coca-Cola Hellenic is constructing a 6.5 megawatt’s  ombined heat and power plant for its manufacturing factory in Benin City, Edo State.

The construction is being carried out by ContourGlobal Solutions, Nigeria, a subsidiary of ContourGlobal, a power and energy operating and development company headquartered in New York.

Mr. David Iriabe, Plants Manager, said the investment will enable the company to significantly reduce its energy consumption, and achieve a 40 percent reduction in carbon emissions.

According to him, the power plant  which is gas and diesel- fired will be ready for commissioning by the end of May , and the Co2 plant by end of June 2011.

ContourGlobal’s Construction Manager, Mr. Evans Igwe, said the company is also handling a  4 megawatt CHP plant in Ikeja, a 1.2 megawatt plant in Apapa, and a 6.5 megawatt plant in Benin, all of which will provide power, heat, steam, and, in the case of Benin, food-grade CO2 to NBC’s beverage bottling facilities.

“It’s a Built, Operate and Transfer (BOT) CHP plant and is 95 per cent efficient, compared with old-fashioned power plants,” he said.

He disclosed that after the project is completed, ContourGlobal will manage it for 15 years , and it will be transferred back to NBC.

“The power plants when completed is capable of generating  99 percent of energy to meet up NBC’s production requirements.  So, constant power supply is guarantee in these sites.

“ They are over 90 per cent efficient in the sense that they are the energy being generated in terms of power and waste is emitted is extracted and converted into other forms of energy that the plant could make use of,” he said.

“It’s a 1 tonnes per hour Co2 power plants, the plants have the capacity to take gas exhausts to generate Co2 for the factory and trucks can come in to load co2 to take out to other plants in the region..

On noise level, he said there won’t be noise to disturb neighbours as the technology is in line with World Bank specification.

The generator sets are containerised such that noise won’t disturb our neigbouring residential areas.
