Jos – Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau has banned the sale of beer or any form of liquor during the National Assembly elections on Saturday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Jang, in a broadcast, Friday, warned that no beer parlour should operate during the accreditation and voting periods.

“We shall ensure strict compliance; no one should …,’’ the Governor declared.

He said that the measure was part of efforts to ensure a peaceful conduct of the  polls.

Jang also declared each Friday preceding each election day a work-free day to enable workers “prepare” for the elections.

The Governor advised those with no business at the voting and collation centres to steer clear of the venues and tasked the electorates to be “vigilant”. 

Jang said that security agencies had been mandated to “fully enforce” the ban on the movement of people during the period of the elections and urged the public to adhere strictly to the directives.

“It is the responsibility of every Nigerian to give the elections all the seriousness it deserve and ensure that the exercise succeeds,” he said.

He reiterated the determination of President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure credible, free and fair polls and that Plateau  State would do everything possible to complement the President’s effort.

Jang challenged politicians to play according to the rules of the game, pointing out that the State was above any individual’s ambition.

According to him, government will stop at nothing to ensure the success of the general elections as “it is the only way through which we can ensure the continuity of our democracy”.
