Abuja – Only two Nigerians were affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami which devastated parts of  Japan, Nigeria’s envoy to Japan,  Mr Godwin Agbo,  has said.

In a statement mailed to the News Agency of Nigeria from Tokyo, Agbo said the affected Nigerians had already been evacuated  and were receiving care from the mission’s  staff.

He said since the outbreak of the earthquake, the embassy had established emergency contact numbers and e-mails on its website for Nigerians in Japan to reach the mission.

 “The embassy has also been in constant touch with the host authorities in Tokyo in order to monitor developments on the leakages at the damaged nuclear power plants in the northern part of Japan.

 ” So far, no Nigerian citizen has been affected by the radiation leakage at the nuclear plant located about 280 kilometres  from Tokyo,” Agbo stated. 

He said the embassy had also  been in regular contact with Nigerians through their associations.

 The envoy said at a recent meeting with the presidents of various Nigerian associations in Japan, he had advised Nigerians to relocate immediate family members  home or to southern  Japan until the situation stabilised.

 “They were also advised to inform members affected by the earthquake and tsunami to use the facilities provided by the host government at the various evacuation centres  for now,” he added.

 Agbo said he also advised Nigerians to stay outside the 30 km radius of the affected areas as advised by the host government.

 He said temporary accommodation facilities had been established within the embassy building to accommodate Nigerians who might be moving to Tokyo from the affected areas.
