WARRI – THE people of Gbekebor in Burutu and Ugborodo communities in Burutu and Warri South-West local government areas of Delta State, have appealed to the Federal Government and its intervention agencies to come to their aid by constructing shore wall to protect their various communities located on the fringe of the Atlantic Ocean from being washed away by the surging ocean waves.
Newly elected National Chairman of Ugborodo Community Youth Development Council, Mr. Julius Atete and Secretary, Mr. Bawo Emami in an interview with Vanguard, said, Ugborodo being a major oil and gas producing community, which also plays host the oil majors and their facilities, was fast going into extinction while the place was being milked daily by Chevron, Shell and NNPC for the benefit of all Nigerians.
Similarly, Gbekebor community in a release by Mr. Alapala Ebitonmo, Daniel Pereware and Ezonfade Amaebi stated that the people have been fighting the menace of the ocean water through self help without success, adding that the problem was beyond their capacity to handle as the rate the erosion was tearing their community had become life threatening.
The coastal communities, who maintained that they had made series of appeals to the relevant authorities that continue to fall on deaf ears, added that it was patently wrong for the government to yield to the voice of reasons only after violent protest with its attendant lost of lives and property.
Both communities, have meanwhile, appealed to the Federal Government to direct the Niger Delta Ministry, Ministry of Works and the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to as a matter of urgency, commence the process of building the shore wall protection to protect the people and communities in other “to safeguard our common wealth in peace and harmony.”
