AWKA – The Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology, Sentor Annie Okonkwo, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to declare the state capital, Awka, a refuse disaster area.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, sitting senator, representing Anambra Central and seeking re-election under the Accord Party, AP, said the grave and filthy environment threatening to eclipse Anambra State deserved the comprehensive emergency of a disaster status.

In a statement issued by Collins Ugwu, the Special Assistant, Media, to the senator, Okonkwo implored the President to, in addition, kindly make the federal might available to radically elevate the erosion menace daily threatening the lives of indigenes and residents of the state to an actionable reality from its present poor situation.

He said: “As a convinced supporter of the President under my fresh and clean platform, Accord Party, it is my duty to avail our turn around, driving Chief Executive of Nigeria, my people’s worries and expectations since it is now evident that the government at lower levels can no longer combat the issues of ecological and environmental problems in the state alone.”

Senator Okonkwo, therefore, concluded that what ever could be done to ameliorate the situation in Anambra state should be done with dispatch as a stitch in time saves nine.
