Violence erupted Friday at Ilobu in Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun State with the Police and commercial motorcyclists locked in a gun battle.
Three people are feared dead in the incident. Six others are reported to be on the danger list at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife.
The Police, however, denied any death. Indeed, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Solomon Olusegun said it was a minor riot and that only two persons – a policeman and a civilian were injured.
The incident came barely two weeks after a similar incident in Ikirun where a policeman shot dead two brothers on a motorcycle. This sparked pandemonium in the community.
The Ilobu clsh reportedly started after a policeman at a check point attempted to stop a commercial motorcyclist who refused to comply. The policeman allegedly then hit him with the booth of his gun.
The victim fell off his motocycle onto the path of an oncoming vehicle and sustained severe injuries.
Following rumour of the death of the man, his colleagues mobilized and launched an attack on a nearby police station about 100metres from the scene of the incident.
During the attack, it was gathered that a police inspector was shot while attempt was made to burn down the police station.
The policemen, it was also learnt, responded swiftly and opened fire at the angry mob.
Police vehicles were seen conveying injured people to the General Hospital. Asubiaro, Osogbo while the serious cases were referred to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile_Ife.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusegun who confirmed the incident said that no life was lost in the incident.
He said that the police had restored normalcy.
