ABUJA — The All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, yesterday vented its anger over allegations that six governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have contributed N6 billion to the 2011 President Jonathan Campaign fund.

According to ANPP, the PDP will have given itself an advantage over other political parties, if the allegations turn out to be true.

The 2010 Electoral Act places a ceiling of N1 billion as the maximum amount any presidential candidate can spend on campaign.

Briefing newsmen at the national headquarters of the ANPP, the National President of ANPP, Chief Ogbonoya Onu, said six PDP governors had each contributed N500 million into the 2011 presidential campaign of President Jonathan, adding that he got the information from news sources.

“Our great party is desirous of getting to the root of this matter. We are inclined to do so because the very foundation of democracy is in danger,” he said.

He charged the Attorney General of the Federation, the National Assembly and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to investigate the matter, make their findings public and take appropriate actions.

“The danger we face in the country in the prevailing circumstances is that the electoral process can be abused and compromised even before the elections.

“The Electoral Act is very clear in terms of limit of expenditure for those seeking election into offices. The ANPP believes that no one should be above the law.

“N500 million from the treasury of a state government to fund a presidential campaign shows a disturbing insensitivity to the present level of underdevelopment and poverty in our county.

“We demand to know the truth for the sake of our democracy, equity and due respect for the laws of our dear country,” he said.
