Allegation of arms supply: I’m ready to hand myself over to police – Oni

BY GBENGA ARIYIBI
ADO-EKITI—The ousted governor of Ekiti State, Engr. Segun Oni has said he is ready to submit  himself to the police if the investigation being carried out indicts him as  responsible for the supply of arms to some robbery suspects now in police net.

This came as he raised an alarm that some mafia had penetrated the nation’s judiciary.

Oni who spoke with  newsmen at his Ifaki Ekiti country home, yesterday, decried the arrest of his Personal Assistant, Mr Bunmi Ojo, by the police over an allegation that he was responsible for the supplies of arms to some political thugs used during the 2009 governorship re-run election in Ido Ekiti.

The leader of the robbery gang, Charles George, now in police net allegedly indicted Oni’s aide during an interrogation, claiming  that all the  weapons found in his possession were provided by Mr Ojo.

Oni who had exonerated himself and his associates, however, warned  the Police against political victimization of his associates in the on-going  investigation into the claims of a robbery kingpin, alleging that the state government was gradually dragging the Police into politics.

Accuses Judiciary of sell-out

The former governor equally condemned Nigerian Judiciary for allegedly selling out to ‘mafia’ in Nigerian political circle.

The former governor who did a brief review of declarative judgments  delivered in some states of the South-West of the country in the recent time as political and dangerous to the development of Nigerian democracy.

He queried why only eight out of the 52 Judges in the Appeal Court are ‘active’ and being recycled to adjudicate on electoral dispute, saying “the scenario potends grave danger for the future of the country and administration of justice.”

He said his election conducted in 2007 was declared null and void by the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division based on the usage of red biros, lamenting that another Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos had noted that the usage of red biros did not affect significantly the results of the election.

Oni  called on the National Judicial Council and the Independent Natrional Electoral Commission, INEC,  “to set up a special panel to make enquiries into all the judgments delivered across the country on election disputes, so that Judges that are desecrating the temple of justice will be fished out.”
