FORMER Deputy Premier of the defunct Midwest region, Chief James Otobo, yesterday, lamented the death of elder statesman, Chief Anthony Enahoro, saying, “I will remember him as the greatest parliamentarian I have ever known.”

Chief Otobo, who spoke to Vanguard on phone from his country home, Uzere in Delta State, said his only regret was that death had permanently cut Chief Enahoro away from the discussion he planned to have with him and former President Shehu Shagari on the convoluted political situation of the country in 2011.

Otobo, who, with the death of Enahoro, is the only surviving agitator for Nigeria’s independence, besides Alhaji Shagari, that attended the London Constitutional Conference of 1957 and 1958, said his efforts to see the deceased the last time he visited Benin City failed.

He, however, said, “death is an inevitable debt that mankind owes nature and whenever it is time to pay, no man will refuse to pay it.”
