Opposition faces challenges in Kano as Governor Abba consolidates support

By Mal. Abdulmalik Suleiman

Politics in Kano has entered a new phase. While Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf continues to consolidate his political base, the opposition, particularly the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), appears to be grappling with internal challenges.

Recent defections of high-profile figures, including Senator Kawu Sumaila and Senator Rufai Hanga, have raised questions about the strength of the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Abba’s administration has focused on education reforms, healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment. Supporters point to visible projects such as school renovations, boreholes, scholarships, and food support as evidence of progress on the ground.

Observers note that when an incumbent is seen to be delivering on governance, the opposition must present a strong alternative to remain competitive. Currently, the NDC is still working to build a robust structure across Kano’s 44 local government areas.

Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the NDC candidate, has been vocal in his criticism of the state government. Political analysts suggest that sustained criticism alone may not be sufficient without a clear alternative agenda and grassroots organisation.

Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most important voting blocs. With the 2027 elections approaching, both the ruling party and the opposition are expected to intensify efforts to win the confidence of voters.

Political observers say the opposition will need to focus on three key areas: building a solid party structure, presenting clear policy alternatives, and maintaining internal unity.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the people of Kano will ultimately decide based on performance, vision, and the ability of candidates to address issues such as jobs, security, and the cost of living.
