A peace advocacy group in Kogi Central, Justice and Order, Say No to Violence in Ebira Land, has expressed concern over recent remarks attributed to former Governor Yahaya Bello regarding opposition leaders.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Alhaji Oganya Abdurazak Mamman, the group noted that such remarks could raise questions about democratic governance, civil liberties, and the rule of law.

The group emphasised that democracy thrives on a strong and vibrant opposition that holds the government accountable and provides alternative viewpoints.

Mamman recalled comments allegedly made by the former governor ahead of the 2023 elections, which some people perceived as threatening to political opponents. He also expressed concern over Bello’s reported call on the current administration to take action against individuals he described as “political criminals.”

The group urged caution in political rhetoric, especially as the nation approaches another election cycle, to avoid heightening political tension.

It called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Attorney-General of the Federation, the judiciary, and President Bola Tinubu to take note of these concerns and protect the constitutional rights of citizens to participate freely in the democratic process without fear of intimidation or harassment.

The group concluded that Nigeria’s democracy must never criminalise dissent or persecute opposition voices.
