ABUJA — Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Thursday received cyclist Mustapha Shehu in Abuja after he rode from Umomi-Ikpokoje in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State to express support for her second-term ambition.
Shehu began the journey on May 29 and arrived in Abuja on June 4 after several days on the road, saying the long-distance ride was a personal show of appreciation for the senator’s representation and grassroots engagement.
Speaking at the National Assembly, the cyclist said his decision was driven by what he described as the senator’s impact on constituents.
“I embarked on this solidarity bicycle ride from my community in Ofu Local Government Area to Abuja to show my appreciation and support for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan,” he said.
“I believe she has made significant impact on the lives of her constituents. The journey was difficult, but I was determined to complete it.”
He added that the ride was also intended to send a message that young people recognise and support effective leadership.
Responding, Senator Natasha commended Shehu for his determination and courage but cautioned against undertaking such long-distance cycling due to prevailing security concerns.
“I sincerely appreciate Mustapha Shehu for this remarkable show of support and goodwill,” she said.
“However, I do not encourage anyone to embark on long-distance road cycling journeys of this nature, especially given the security challenges in the country. Safety must always come first.”
She advised the cyclist to channel his passion into structured sporting opportunities through recognised cycling bodies in Nigeria.
“I encourage him to explore opportunities within established cycling organisations where his talent and endurance can be properly developed,” she added.
The senator noted that such platforms could help transform his interest into a sustainable sporting career.
The meeting attracted supporters at the National Assembly, where the cyclist’s journey was widely praised as a remarkable show of dedication and political support.
