Reps spokesperson backs Oyedele on 2025 capital projects delivery

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has expressed strong confidence in the ability of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, to address delays affecting the execution of the 2025 capital projects and reposition Nigeria’s fiscal management.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Agbese said the appointment of Oyedele by President Bola Tinubu reflects a deliberate effort by the Federal Government to strengthen economic governance and restore efficiency in the budgetary process.

He dismissed concerns that delays in capital project implementation indicate systemic failure, noting instead that they are part of a broader transition aimed at improving fiscal discipline.

Agbese described Oyedele as a seasoned fiscal policy expert with extensive experience in tax reform, revenue generation, and public finance. According to him, the minister’s professional background places him in a strong position to tackle longstanding structural challenges that have hindered effective budget implementation.

He further highlighted Oyedele’s previous role as head of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, where he contributed to developing frameworks designed to boost revenue and align fiscal policies with national development priorities.

The lawmaker said the minister’s experience across both public and private sectors, including advisory roles in global consulting, provides him with a comprehensive understanding of Nigeria’s economic realities.

Agbese stressed that Nigerians expect tangible results rather than policy rhetoric, urging the finance ministry to prioritise efficient deployment of budgetary allocations. He noted that improved capital releases and timely execution of projects are critical to achieving visible development outcomes across sectors.

He also assured that the National Assembly would continue to provide the necessary legislative backing and oversight to support ongoing reforms within the finance ministry.

“As a parliament, we will collaborate with the executive to ensure that appropriate frameworks are established for effective budget implementation,” he said.

Agbese expressed optimism that with strong leadership, clear policy direction, and institutional support, the pace of capital project execution would improve significantly in the coming months.

He added that the reforms being introduced under Oyedele’s leadership are expected to enhance overall economic governance and align the national budget more closely with the expectations and needs of Nigerians.
