How Toyota wrestled most reliable car brand title from Subaru

When it come to making cars, Toyota does not take a second spot.

This, it proved with the way it wrestled back Consumer Report Most Reliable Car Brand title from Subaru in the 2026.

Reliability continues to be a major driver of car-buying decisions.

According to a 2024 study by CarGurus, 41 percent of car buyers identified reliability as a key influencing factor in their purchase decisions—surpassing considerations such as budget or expected ownership costs.

For automakers, therefore, dependability is not just a technical metric but a powerful selling point and a badge of honor.

In its latest reliability assessment, Consumer Reports found that Japanese automakers once again dominated the rankings for new vehicles.

However, the order at the top has shifted.

For 2026, Toyota secured first place, wrestling the title back from Subaru, which slips to second after leading the ranking last year.

Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, also experienced a slight drop, moving from second place in 2025 to third in the latest report.

Industry observers note that the top three brands share more than just strong reliability records.

Toyota owns approximately 20 percent of Subaru, and the two companies collaborate on several vehicle models. Notably,

Toyota’s bZ4X shares its platform with Subaru’s Solterra, while the Toyota GR86 is closely related to Subaru’s BRZ sports coupe.

The close technical and corporate ties may partly explain the consistent engineering standards reflected in their reliability scores.

Toyota’s return to the top reinforces its long-standing reputation for building durable, low-maintenance vehicles—an image that has helped the brand maintain strong global sales over decades.

As competition intensifies in both traditional combustion vehicles and emerging electric models, the 2026 rankings underscore a clear message: in an era of rapid innovation, proven reliability remains king.
