Nigerian newspapers review: Boost for state police as IGP sets up panel on framework

In today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard’s lead headline states that momentum for state police increased as the newly sworn-in Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, set up a high-level committee to design an implementation framework, stating that decentralised policing has come to stay.

Another headline features Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who criticised US President Donald Trump after he threatened to halt trade with Spain over its refusal to support US attacks on Iran, warning that escalating tensions in the Middle East amount to gambling with the fate of millions.

Vanguard also reports that former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, said he deliberately declined to answer investigators’ questions, insisting the probe by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) was politically motivated.

Moving to the next paper, The Guardian leads with the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, inaugurating a committee to examine the framework for state police, injecting fresh momentum into Nigeria’s long-delayed policing reform debate.

Next paper, The Punch features former President Olusegun Obasanjo dismissing rumours about his death, saying at 89, he is still strong and those circulating a fake letter about him dying were wasting their time because he “dey kampe.”

Lastly, Daily Trust reports that Chinedum Elechi, the Mandate Secretary for Transport in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), reaffirmed the FCTA’s commitment to constructing modern terminals to enhance public transport and curb crime in the FCT.
