Comrade Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, popularly known as ‘OPIANO’, on Friday declared his intention to contest the presidency of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANs ),under the IMPACT Movement, pledging to prioritise unity and grassroots empowerment.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Opeoluwa said his campaign would be guided by the slogan “Vox Populi Vox Dei” — the voice of the people is the voice of God.
“I am proud to announce my candidacy for the position of NANS President under the banner of the IMPACT movement.
“This is not merely a slogan; it is a commitment to ensuring that every student’s voice is heard, valued, and respected.”
He outlined plans to collaborate closely with Student Union Government presidents across tertiary institutions to tackle pressing issues affecting students, including rising school fees, accommodation challenges and poor learning conditions.
According to him, such partnerships would also drive advocacy for equitable education policies and improved access to quality resources for students nationwide.
Opeoluwa added that his agenda included eliminating factionalism within the association and fostering an inclusive leadership structure that reflects the diversity of the Nigerian student population.
“My agenda is clear — to eradicate factionalism within NANS and cultivate an environment where every student benefits from our collective efforts,” he said. “I envision a unified and representative NANS where collaboration replaces division.”
Highlighting his experience in student activism, the PhD student said his leadership journey began at the Federal University of Technology, Akure Students’ Union, where he developed a deeper understanding of student struggles and aspirations.
He noted that his subsequent role as Public Relations Officer of NANS Zone D exposed him to the power of unity and collective action within the student movement.
Calling for support, Opeoluwa urged union leaders and students across campuses to rally behind what he described as a vision of impact, empowerment and lasting change.
“To my fellow students, I ask for your grassroots support.
“Together, we can reshape the future of student leadership in Nigeria and make NANS a true beacon of hope”, he said.
