A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and security expert, Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as a strategic initiative that could boost economic growth and strengthen Nigeria’s security framework.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni rejected opposition criticisms that labelled the trip as unnecessary amid rising insecurity.
He said international partnerships are critical to national development, noting that diplomatic relations facilitate investment, job creation, infrastructure improvement, and enhanced institutional capacity.
“The President’s engagements in the United Kingdom are expected to open avenues for business partnerships and attract investors,” Mumuni said, adding that a stronger economy provides resources needed to fund security operations and development initiatives, especially in vulnerable regions.
He highlighted that international cooperation allows access to modern security technologies, advanced training methods, and intelligence-sharing systems that strengthen the effectiveness of Nigeria’s armed forces and security agencies.
Mumuni explained that the President’s role in governance is to provide strategic direction through policy, funding, and diplomatic engagement, while military and law enforcement agencies handle operations on the ground.
“The President does not personally fight battles or investigate crimes. His responsibility is to create the enabling environment for institutions to perform effectively. Engagements such as state visits are part of that responsibility,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that security operations continue without disruption, with the National Security Adviser, military leadership, and other agencies fully engaged.
Mumuni also urged citizens to adopt a broader understanding of governance, stressing that national progress relies on integrating economic policy, diplomacy, and security planning. He likened the process to a household where responsibilities must be balanced to achieve stability.
Calling for greater accountability, he urged that the outcomes of international engagements be translated into tangible improvements in security and development.
“President Tinubu’s visit should be seen as part of a wider strategy to strengthen the nation. The real issue is ensuring that the gains from such engagements are translated into concrete benefits for the security and prosperity of Nigerians,” he added.
