Valentine’s Day: NACA cautions against high-risk behaviour

By Sola Ogundipe

On this year’s Valentine’s Day, a day traditionally synonymous with flowers, chocolate, and romance, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has admonished Nigerians that the ultimate expression of love is the protection of one’s health.

In her Valentine’s Day message entitled “Celebrate Love Safely” the Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, has charged Nigerians to balance the excitement of the season with a commitment to safety, emphasising that responsibility should be at the heart of every celebration.

Calling for responsible romance, Ilori said while Valentine’s Day is a peak period for social gatherings and intimacy, she pointed out that it is also a time when many inadvertently increase their vulnerability to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

“As we mark Valentine’s Day, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) calls on everyone to celebrate love responsibly by taking deliberate steps to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

“While this season is known for expressions of affection and connection, it is equally important to avoid behaviours that increase vulnerability to HIV. Protecting your health and that of your partner remains one of the greatest expressions of love,” the D-G stated.

Calling on Nigerians to make informed choices that safeguard their health and future while contributing to the national goal of ending new HIV infections, Illori stated,”Let love be guided by responsibility. Knowing your status and protecting yourself and others is a powerful way to show you care.”

The agency encourages all Nigerians to take actions that include knowing their status by getting tested for HIV and encouraging their partners to do the same.

To ensure the season remains joyful and safe, NACA has outlined five critical steps for Nigerians to follow.

These include:

Use protection – Consistent and correct use of condoms remains one of the most effective ways to practice safe sex.

Avoid risky behaviours – The agency advises limiting sexual partners and avoiding transactional sex.
Celebrate responsibly – Be wary of excessive alcohol or substance use, which can impair judgment and lead to unprotected encounters.

Access services – Professional counseling, prevention, and treatment services are readily available at government health facilities nationwide.

The Director-General’s message isn’t just about one day of the year; it’s part of a broader national goal to end new HIV infections in Nigeria.

By making informed choices this weekend, NACA says everyone is contributing to a healthier future for the entire country.

NACA reiterated its ongoing commitment to expanding access to quality HIV prevention and care services. For those seeking information or support, the agency maintains a Toll-Free line (6222) and provides resources via their official website.
