Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has partnered with the U.S.-based humanitarian organisation Project CURE to supply medical equipment worth over ₦8 billion to 10 general hospitals across the district.

The announcement followed a needs assessment tour of five hospitals in Kagarko, Kachia, Sanga, Kafanchan, and Zonkwa, aimed at identifying critical gaps in healthcare infrastructure.

Speaking to journalists after the visit, Senator Katung said the initiative is designed to improve service delivery and ensure that residents have access to quality healthcare closer to home.

“For too long, our general hospitals have struggled with inadequate or outdated equipment. This partnership is part of our deliberate effort to reverse that trend and enhance patient care,” he said.

The five hospitals assessed will serve as reference facilities for the remaining hospitals included in the first phase of the project, with St. Louis Hospital, Zonkwa, also proposed for inclusion. Following the review, Project CURE agreed to increase the number of equipment containers to 11 to meet demand across the 10 hospitals.

“This is a five-year partnership with Project CURE, ensuring continuity, monitoring, and sustainability. Our goal is to build a healthcare system that people can trust,” Katung added.

Project CURE’s Team Lead, Rose Polycarp, said the equipment would be delivered within three to six months. Each container contains medical equipment valued at approximately $500,000, bringing the total value to around $5.5 million. She commended the senator for facilitating the collaboration and reiterated the organisation’s commitment to sustainable healthcare development in the district.

Local government leaders welcomed the initiative. Hon. Peter Tanko Dogara, Executive Chairman of Jema’a LGA, described it as timely and impactful. “Our hospitals have dedicated health workers, but they are limited by inadequate equipment. This support will significantly improve service delivery,” he said.

Engr. Bege Joseph Gaiya, Executive Chairman of Zangon Kataf LGA, praised the senator for addressing the people’s needs, adding that the intervention complements ongoing state government efforts to strengthen primary and secondary healthcare services.

Members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly representing Jema’a, Sanga, Zangon Kataf, and Jaba constituencies also commended the initiative, describing it as responsive and focused on improving constituents’ welfare.

The intervention is expected to enhance hospital capacity, improve patient care, and provide a framework for sustained healthcare support under the five-year partnership.
