The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has equipped Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) with a state-of-the-art Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory, aligning with global best practices in medical education and strengthening local capacity in Bayelsa State and Nigeria at large.
The laboratory features high-fidelity adult and pediatric patient simulators, laparoscopic training systems, obstetric trainers, advanced life-support mannequins, consultation cubicles, and audio-visual learning systems. The facility enables students to hone life-saving skills in a zero-risk environment before treating human patients.
Speaking at the weekend commissioning ceremony at the Clinical Skills Acquisition Centre on the BMU main campus, NCDMB Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, emphasized that capacity building extends beyond oil and gas to sectors such as healthcare and education.
He noted that simulation-based learning has become the global standard in medical education, allowing students to acquire hands-on clinical skills, improve decision-making, and build confidence in a controlled, safe environment before engaging real patients.
Represented by Mr. Ene Ette, Acting Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at the Board, the Executive Secretary commended the management of BMU and partner organisations for their collaboration and shared vision. He described the upgraded laboratory as a strategic investment in human capacity development and a practical demonstration of how policy can translate into measurable impact.
In his welcome address, BMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Dimie Ogoina, hailed the partnership, saying it secures the future of healthcare in Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
“We are not just training doctors for today; we are nurturing digital-age physicians capable of competing on the global stage,” he said.
He recalled that upon assuming office in 2025, he unveiled the ASPIRE agenda to transform BMU into a globally recognised leader in medical education, research, and innovation driven by technology and excellence. He added that the new facility reflects that vision in action.
Professor Ogoina noted that the advanced equipment—from patient simulators and CPR mannequins to surgical and diagnostic kits—would help reduce medical errors, improve patient safety, and support the development of indigenous healthcare professionals to serve communities and industries.
He also appreciated Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, and the Commissioners for Health and Education for creating an enabling environment that supports partnerships like the one with NCDMB.
Similarly, the Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Philip Eyimina, expressed gratitude to the Board for equipping the Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory and to the state government for its continued commitment to strengthening healthcare and education.
He noted that the upgraded laboratory played a significant role in the institution’s recent accreditation verification exercise.
According to him, the presence of a functional, well-equipped clinical skills laboratory affirmed the university’s readiness to deliver high-quality medical education in line with national standards.
“In this laboratory, our students will learn essential competencies—including history taking, physical examination, suturing, intravenous access, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, obstetric skills, and emergency response—while developing critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills,” he said.
In a special address, Governor Douye Diri, who is the Visitor to the university, lauded the NCDMB for providing what he described as remarkable facilities.
Represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Gentle Emelah, the governor reiterated the Vice Chancellor’s aspiration to make BMU a leading university in medicine, noting that the Board’s intervention demonstrates a strong commitment to projecting the institution to the global stage.
