The need to strengthen professionalism, enforce quality standards and reposition medical laboratory practice in Lagos took centre stage on Thursday as the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors (GMLD), Lagos Branch, elected new executives for the 2026 administrative year.
The election, held at the Medical Laboratory Science Council office in Yaba, was framed not merely as a leadership transition but as a call to confront mounting challenges in laboratory governance, quality assurance and professional ethics.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, AMLSN, Mr. Kabiawu Gbolahan Adegboyega, warned that leadership in the sector now carries far-reaching implications for healthcare delivery.
“Leadership in our profession at this time requires courage, integrity, collaboration and expertise. The healthcare landscape is evolving rapidly, with increasing demand for quality assurance. The decisions you take will directly affect healthcare outcomes, professional development and ethical standards in laboratory practice,” he said.
He stressed that laboratory directors must rise to the challenge of improving standards and safeguarding patient safety, noting that accurate diagnostics remain the backbone of effective treatment.
Also addressing the new executives, National Vice Chairman of GMLD, Mr. Onaneye Olamiyiwa, urged them to take decisive action from day one.
“As leaders, you have the responsibility to take charge. We expect constructive feedback and active engagement. Mr. Chairman, you have taken the baton. We want you to hit the ground running.”
Outgoing Chairman, Mr. Adekoya Abimbola Julius, reflected on the gains recorded under his administration, attributing institutional and financial improvements to collective effort rather than personal achievement.
He challenged the incoming team to raise the bar further. “Build boldly, think progressively, digitise strategically, govern transparently and lead inclusively,” he said, adding that “leadership is not about power but stewardship.”
Elected to steer the affairs of the Lagos Branch are Mrs. Mark Doris Chinelo Callistus as Chairman; Mr. Unamba Ikechukwu Valentine as Vice Chairman; Mr. Faleye Emmanuel Remi Oluleye as General Secretary; Mrs. Akande Funmilola Ololade as Treasurer; Mrs. Ikegwuonu Stella as Financial Secretary; Mr. Ojo Anota Adedayo as Welfare Officer; Mr. Vincent Okechukwu Iwunze as Publicity Secretary; Mr. Maduka Bethel Onyinyechi as Auditor; and Mr. Emeka Anthony Onyejiji as Assistant General Secretary.
In her acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman, Mrs. Doris Mark Chinelo Callistus, pledged a results-driven administration anchored on professionalism and accountability.
“We thank members for the confidence reposed in us. We will discharge our responsibilities diligently and exceptionally,” she said.
The event also featured awards presented to outstanding members in recognition of their contributions to advancing the profession, reinforcing the broader message that sustaining standards and rewarding excellence remain critical to the future of medical laboratory practice in Lagos.
