The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has granted full accreditation to the Federal University of Technology, Akure School of Health Sciences.

In a statement by Tope Fayehun, Chairman of the Media/Publicity Committee of the Community Central Planning Committee on the Establishment of FUTA Teaching Hospital, described the accreditation as a milestone achieved through community resolve.

Fayehun said the MDCN confirmed that the institution’s College of Medicine has earned full recognition following the council’s visit.

The MDCN team, led by Deputy Registrar Dr. Nnameka Nwakanma, gave the seal of approval during its accreditation visit to the institution on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.

“By this feat, the College of Medicine will be recognised and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. This milestone also includes an approved admission quota of 100 for the MBBS programme,” Fayehun said.

He noted that the MDCN accreditation follows that of the National Universities Commission, which granted full accreditation for the Medicine and Surgery programme in a letter dated April 7, 2026, after a resource verification exercise.

“This landmark approval marks a pivotal step in elevating healthcare education and service delivery in Ondo State and beyond,” he added.

Fayehun said the assignment entrusted to the committee by the people of Akure Land had been delivered under the leadership of its Chairman, Dr. Olufemi Oyinsan.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his exceptional leadership and for graciously granting the heartfelt request of the Akure people,” he said.

He commended several individuals and groups for their contributions to the achievement.

These include Pa R.F. Fasoranti, who he said “pulled the final trigger that delivered the FUTA Teaching Hospital,” and Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, the Asiwaju of Akure, who “single-handedly funded well over 50% of the cost of the huge medical laboratory equipment for the FUTA College of Health Sciences.”

Others acknowledged are Senator Niyi Adegbonmire for his donation; Barrister Olumuyiwa Adu, who provided a brand-new three-storey building to accommodate the first set of about 50 clinical students next to the FUTA Teaching Hospital; and Mr. Olumide Origunloye, Founder of Crest FM radio stations.

Also listed were Chief Engr. Leke Adedipe, Prince Akinwunmi Falodun, Mr. Taiye James, Oyemekun International Club USA, Akure and Friends Chicago USA, H.E. Omolade Oluwateru, former Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Kolawole Atandeyi, Barr. Stephen Rotimi Abitogun, Engr. Dapo Ajayi, Hon. Gbenga Fasua, Chief Mrs. Funmilayo Adekanye, and Adekunle Michael.

Friends of Akure who contributed include Prof. Olabode Ayorinde, Pro-Chancellor of Achievers University, Owo; Senator Olajide Ipinsagba of Ondo North Senatorial District; and Hon. Abiola Makinde.

Fayehun paid special appreciation to CCPC Chairman Dr. Olufemi Oyinsan “for his untiring efforts,” noting that he not only coordinated the activities that birthed the dream but also donated a substantial sum toward its realisation.

He also recognised other committee members including General Secretary Barrister Kehinde Ige, Treasurer Mr. Ayo Ajayi, Dr. Deji Adegoroye, and others.

He commended the Deji of Akure, His Royal Majesty Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, for the confidence reposed in the committee members.

“This accreditation not only strengthens FUTA and the Teaching Hospital’s role as a beacon of medical excellence but also reaffirms Akure’s commitment to advancing national healthcare,” Fayehun said.

He added that the committee remains dedicated to supporting the university and hospital’s growth and invites all stakeholders to join in celebrating the shared victory.
