As FSSS set to drive inclusive growth through smallholder farming

The Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions ,FSSS, has concluded plans to implement a three-year programme aimed at strengthening climate resilience and promoting regenerative agriculture among smallholder farmers in Bauchi North Senatorial District.

Briefingnewsmen, the Executive Director of FSSS, Mr Isaiah Gabriel, disclosed that the initiative represents a major step forward in empowering farmers to adapt to the challenges of a changing climate.

He said, “The programme in partnership with with the Heineken Africa Foundation ,HAF, titled Empowerment of Smallholders to Thrive and Build Climate Resilience through Regenerative Agriculture ,ESTRRA, will directly benefit 14,000 smallholder farmers across seven Local Government Areas — Katagum, Giade, Shira, Gamawa, Itas-Gadau, Jama’are, and Zaki.

“The initiative places a strong emphasis on inclusion, targeting 60 per cent women and 30 per cent youth.

“It is also expected to positively impact more than 70,000 indirect beneficiaries across the region through various community-led interventions.

Through the ESTRRA project, over 20,000 hectares of degraded land will be reclaimed from desertification using sustainable restoration techniques such as half-moons and reforestation with fruit-bearing crops. The project will also promote mixed farming systems to improve household nutrition, enhance farmers’ earnings through off-season livelihood opportunities, and strengthen market access for smallholders adopting regenerative and climate smart practices.

“ESTRRA provides an opportunity to equip smallholder farmers with the knowledge and resources they need to adapt to a changing climate. Through capacity building, we aim to build resilient farming communities that enhance food security and sustainable livelihoods across Northern Bauchi.

“This initiative brings us closer to our vision of a Nigeria where smallholder farming drives inclusive growth and prosperity. It demonstrates what can be achieved when partnerships are harnessed for sustainable rural development,”

Also speaking on the collaboration, General Manager of the Heineken Africa Foundation, Mr Edwin Moerkerk, reaffirmed HAF’s commitment to strengthening the resilience of African farming communities.

He said, “We look forward to working with FSSS to strengthen the resilience of Nigeria’s smallholder farming communities. Our goal is to connect farmers with the right resources and networks, enabling them to grow sustainably. Our vision is that African smallholder farmers can prosper, securing a sustainable food system for all. Together with FSSS, we can build a stronger, more resilient future.

“The project will be implemented through the Farmers’ Hub Model, a proven approach that improves farmers’ access to quality inputs, training, and markets while promoting environmentally friendly and inclusive farming systems. Key project activities will include farmer training on regenerative practices, soil restoration demonstrations, group strengthening for women and youth, and value chain development to improve income opportunities.”
