Kaduna – As part of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2025, the Nigerian Army has provided humanitarian services across Kaduna State, offering free medical outreach, commissioning solar-powered boreholes, and extending welfare support to widows and wounded soldiers.
In Katabu Community, Igabi Local Government Area, hundreds of residents benefited from a comprehensive medical outreach led by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, who was represented by the Chief of Army Administration, Major General Lawrence A. Fejokwu. The initiative included treatment for various ailments, eye examinations, dental care, blood pressure screenings, and the donation of wheelchairs to persons with disabilities.
“Soldiers are peace lovers,” said Maj. Gen. Fejokwu. “The Army appreciates the peaceful coexistence in Katabu and will continue to support initiatives that promote unity and harmony.”
Brigadier General Samson O. Okoigi, Acting Commander of the Army Medical Corps, who led the medical team, emphasized that the outreach was part of a nationwide effort to strengthen civil-military relations. “Our aim is to promote the health and well-being of local communities, even as we commemorate NADCEL 2025,” he said.
Residents of Mararaba Jos and neighboring areas also accessed free healthcare services, including HIV screening, consultations, free eyeglasses, and medications.
At the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) conducted a special humanitarian outreach. Over 120 widows, women in maternity wards, children, and injured soldiers received food items, cash, and essential supplies.
Mrs. Mernan Oluyede, NAOWA President, represented by Deputy President Mrs. Bilkisu Ibrahim, said the gesture was a demonstration of NAOWA’s enduring compassion.
“Our focus today is on the widows of our fallen heroes. These women represent courage and the dignity of sacrifice. We stand with them in unity and gratitude,” she said.
She reaffirmed NAOWA’s commitment to fostering a compassionate and inclusive barracks community, aligning with this year’s NADCEL theme: “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for the Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive.”
Many widows expressed heartfelt appreciation for the support, with some shedding tears as they received their packages.
In Basawa Community, Sabon-Gari LGA, the Army commissioned a 30,000-litre solar-powered borehole to provide clean water and improve public health. The COAS, represented by Maj. Gen. Obinna Ajunwa, Commandant of the Armoured Corps, described the project as part of the Army’s non-kinetic efforts to build trust with local communities.
“This project addresses a vital need for clean water and reflects our commitment to the well-being of Nigerians,” he said.
The District Head of Basawa, Alhaji Haruna Bamalli, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community and assured the Army of proper maintenance of the facility.
As part of the celebration of 162 years of service, the Nigerian Army organized a ceremonial golf tournament at the Ola Saad Golf Club in Jaji Military Cantonment. The event brought together professional, military, and civilian golfers.
In the Veteran category, Hassan Adamu won with a net score of 72. David Bisallah led the Professional category with a gross score of 73. Among Military Men, Lt. Col. JA Omale had the best net score of 61, while Major SM Saidu recorded the best gross score of 80.
Major General Godwin Umelo, who served as the Special Guest of Honour, praised the Army for its legacy and ongoing contributions to national peace and security.
The NADCEL 2025 celebrations across Kaduna State highlighted the Nigerian Army’s commitment to people-centered service, moving beyond military operations to support healthcare, clean water access, and community welfare—further reinforcing its role as a stabilizing and compassionate force within Nigerian society.
