ABUJA – In a bid to combat rising issues of youth involvement in crime, substance abuse, and human trafficking, the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT) has launched a new student initiative aimed at empowering young Nigerians to serve as agents of change.
The initiative, called the Student Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (S-NACAT), seeks to instill values of integrity, civic responsibility, and awareness among students across Nigeria.
The launch event took place at Dorben College of Digital Technology in Dutsen-Alhaji, Abuja, bringing together educators, students, and civil society actors.
During the event, students were introduced to the objectives of the new club, which was designed to promote grassroots advocacy, peer education, and community action on issues like drug abuse, corruption, and human trafficking.
Mr. Stanley Ugagbe, the Operational Manager of NACAT, delivered a keynote speech titled ‘Understanding Substance Abuse.’
He emphasized the importance of early intervention: “Addiction doesn’t start with a needle or a pill, it starts with a choice. And every choice has a consequence,” he explained.
While warning students about the legal dangers of drug use, he added, “being caught with even a small quantity of banned substances could lead to criminal charges that may ruin a young person’s future.”
Ugagbe also highlighted the emotional toll of substance abuse, encouraging students to seek help and prioritize their mental health and community support.
According to him, the initiative highlights a broader strategy to prevent future criminality, social instability, and economic costs by addressing these issues early among Nigeria’s youth.
Miss Joy Tomo, NACAT Programme Manager, played a key role in the event by unveiling the new S-NACAT club and urging students to take ownership of the platform.
“You are not just members; you are pioneers of a national movement that prioritizes ethical leadership, anti-corruption values, and human dignity,” she said.
Student leaders were elected and inaugurated, with Augusta Ikechukwu named President, Daniel Damolekun as Vice President, Ibrahim Hafsat as Secretary, and Emmanuel Unemilin as Public Relations Officer.
Teachers, including Mrs. Evelyn Philip, Miss Legbe Akira, and Mr. Paul Oyiedi, were appointed to supervise the club’s activities and ensure continuity.
Representing the school management, Mr. Oyiedi expressed gratitude for NACAT’s initiative, noting that the club would help shape students’ character and reinforce discipline and community service.
“This programme will strengthen our school’s stance on discipline and national values,” he said.
The students signed up for membership and expressed enthusiasm to begin awareness projects on drug abuse, corruption, and human trafficking.
