As part of efforts to equip staff of the Lagos State House of Assembly, the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, Lagos Chapter, on Thursday commenced a two-day capacity-building workshop in order to function effectively.

With the theme: “The Role of Unionism in a Political Environment”, the two-day workshop features interactive sessions and expert-led discussions aimed at equipping PASAN executives with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate and influence the political landscape effectively.

In a keynote address, former Permanent Secretary in the civil service, Mr. Biodun Bamgboye, underscored the pivotal role unions play in strengthening citizens’ participation and enhancing public trust in institutions.

According to him, the effectiveness of a union is largely determined by how it positions and presents itself in relation to leadership and governance structures.

Bamgboye noted that, government and civil servants are partners working together for one purpose as public figures adding that, every activity should be tailored towards initiatives that would positively impact the public. “So as a trade unionist, and a ranking one at that, you must engage regularly in a direct tripartite setting”, he said.

In his opening address, the Chairman of the association, Mr. Babatunde Ogunlana, stressed the need for executive members to fully understand their responsibilities within a political setting. He pointed out the significance of revisiting the union’s involvement in the events of January 13 at the Assembly, noting that it serves as a backdrop for the workshop.

“The circumstantial role played by the union in the January 13 saga in the House needs to be addressed, hence the need for this 2-day workshop,” he stated, urging all participants to stay attentive throughout the sessions.

The Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, welcomed the initiative, describing the timing as both strategic and commendable.

He applauded the Zonal Vice President of PASAN, Mr. Taofeek Adele, for his commitment and ingenuity. He also advised union members to exercise caution and professionalism in handling workplace matters.

“We are fortunate to have a labour-friendly environment here in the Assembly, and we must not take that for granted,” he added.

Similarly, the Lagos State Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Mrs. Funmi Sessy, appreciated the Speaker of the House, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, and the Clerk for supporting the much-needed training. She emphasized a shift from aggressive unionism to strategic engagement.

“The era of banging the table to make demands is over. Now, it i’s about using strategy and knowledge,” she noted. “This kind of programme equips union members with practical understanding and operational skills.” She urged continued training and capacity-building initiatives to keep PASAN members aligned with their counterparts across the state.

Among the dignitaries present were Mrs. Adenike Oshinowo, Deputy Clerk; Mrs. Kemi Quadri, Director of Finance; Princess Jumoke Sotonwa, Director of Training; and Mrs. Adekoya Abisola, Director of Public Affairs.
