ABAKALIKI: The Controller of Corrections, Nigerian Correctional Service, Ebonyi State Command, Offem Bessie, has raised concerns over the severe overcrowding at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abakaliki. The facility, originally built in 1949 to accommodate 387 inmates, now houses 1,323 inmates, posing a serious security threat to the state.

Bessie sounded the alarm during the release of 159 detainees granted amnesty by Governor Francis Nwifuru for their involvement in the Ezza/Effium communal crisis.

She warned that the overcrowding situation could trigger riots, jailbreaks, or other security concerns if not addressed urgently.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service plays a critical role in maintaining the security architecture of the state. We ensure the efforts of other security agencies are not wasted. Therefore, we urgently request the following support to maintain effective service delivery and safeguard the state,” Bessie stated.

Bessie urged the state government to release funds for the completion of the new custodial facility, which has been under construction since 2017 and has a capacity of 1,212 inmates.

She called for the construction of a security wall around the existing custodial centre to prevent external attacks and jailbreaks.

Governor Nwifuru, in his speech during the event, explained that the amnesty was part of efforts to bring lasting peace to the troubled Effium community.

He urged the released detainees to contribute to peacebuilding and live harmoniously with others.

“The amnesty is rooted in justice and mercy. Those released were involved in offences directly linked to the communal crisis. This does not exonerate them from accountability but offers a second chance to contribute positively to their community and the state,” Nwifuru said.

The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to peace, rehabilitation, and addressing security concerns in Ebonyi State.
