Perfect Woman: A Bold Film Championing Women’s Health in Nigeria

Perfect Woman: A Bold Film Championing Women’s Health in Nigeria

Melanin Unscripted and its impact platform Rise In Light, in partnership with the Cervical Cancer Free Nigeria (CCFN) Campaign, proudly present Perfect Woman — one of the first narrative short films on cervical cancer in Nigeria.

This powerful film, premiered on January 23rd, 2024, aims to spark life-saving conversations and empower women to prioritize their health through

education and screenings.

Directed by Miracle Blaise, Perfect Woman was created through the Storytellers for Change Grant, an initiative by Rise in Light and supported by Global Oncology (GO). This grant empowers filmmakers to address urgent social issues like cervical cancer.

A Story of Friendship and Empowerment

Filmed in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, Perfect Woman follows the emotional journey of Ebiye and Lavender, two women whose lives intertwine through their shared experience with cancer.

Their story highlights the importance of early detection and challenges the misconception that cervical cancer discriminates by social class.

The film stars Nollywood veteran Tina Mba as Dr. Wunmi, a guiding light for the protagonists, alongside rising talents Mfon Akpan as Ebiye and Uduak Akpabio as Lavender.

Inspiration Behind the Film

Reflecting on the origins of the project, Amarachi Nwosu, the film’s executive producer, founder of Melanin Unscripted, and a Forbes 30 Under 30 filmmaker and creative executive, revealed,  “Perfect Woman was inspired by a personal and professional commitment to creating stories that matter. My mother is a breast cancer survivor, and seeing her navigate that journey showed me firsthand how vital early detection, education, and support are for saving lives. That experience motivated me to focus on cervical cancer, one of the most preventable yet deadly cancers affecting women in Nigeria.”

Beyond personal ties, the film aligns closely with the mission of her media platform, Melanin Unscripted.

“On a professional level, Perfect Woman aligns perfectly with the mission of Melanin Unscripted—to amplify underrepresented voices, disrupt stereotypes, and tell stories that spark change. This project was created through our Storytellers for Change grant, an initiative from Rise in Light, our impact arm, in partnership with Global Oncology and the Cervical Cancer Free Nigeria Campaign. Supporting Miracle Blaise, the talented grant recipient, in bringing his vision to life was such an important part of this process. It was a privilege to co-write and executive produce a film that is not only emotionally powerful but also has the potential to educate and save lives.”

 A Director’s Vision

For Blaise, the motivations for the project were clear, “The first being my vision as a filmmaker: telling stories for me has never been about entertainment alone. Stories are an essential part of human evolution. Pockets of evolution can be driven by the right stories, and this project presented an opportunity for one of such evolutions in the knowledge of health.”

Blaise also emphasised the film’s broader goals: “I hope that through this project—supported by promotions and community screenings—women who might not have had the chance to learn about cervical cancer will now be empowered with knowledge. The film also emphasizes a critical aspect of the awareness journey: social participation. I hope that not just women, but entire communities, will learn the importance of support in fighting this disease.”

Storytelling as a Tool for Change

Highlighting the power of storytelling, Amarachi said, “Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have to address complex social issues. In Africa, where oral traditions have always been a cornerstone of culture, film acts as a modern extension of that tradition, allowing us to reach wider audiences and create lasting impact. Stories help us make sense of the world, and when told effectively, they can challenge misconceptions, change behaviors, and inspire action.”

She further elaborated on Melanin Unscripted’s mission, “At Melanin Unscripted, our mission is to amplify voices and stories that often go unheard. By tackling topics like cervical cancer through the lens of authentic storytelling, we can open the door to critical conversations, foster empathy, and ultimately create the change in access to health care, life-saving information, and inspiration to press forward even through the challenges that life presents.”

With Perfect Woman, both Amarachi and Blaise bring to life a project that not only educates but inspires communities to rally against cervical cancer, setting a precedent for how storytelling can shape the future of health advocacy.
