Michael Bamidele’s journey through fashion journalism

Michael Bamidele’s journey through fashion journalism

By Adetutu Audu

Michael Bamidele is an ardent force in Nigerian fashion journalism. Michael Bamidele is known for his keen observance and impeccable writing, plus an instinctive talent for identifying those really interesting stories from beneath the seam. He studied communications and had a vested interest in style. He had originally contributed to lifestyle platforms, where his blend of cultural insight within fashion coverage set him apart.

Some of his early work was on emerging Nigerian designers, red carpet reviews, and analysing African fashion trends, carving his name into the annals as one who could critique and champion the industry. The voice thus found itself in an established platform, The Guardian Nigeria, one of Nigeria’s leading newspapers, where he started sharpening his style – learning the ropes of runway shows, designer interviews, and the politics of fashion between identity, heritage, and social change.

He has influenced the world of fashion across borders. 2022 saw him serve as bootcamp judge for the Accra Mall Fashion Fund in Ghana, mentoring emerging designers and judging their creative and business strategies. His insight helped young talents align their design vision with market realities. The Eko Heritage Awards named him Fashion Journalist of the Year in July 2024, thereby acknowledging his work in documenting and amplifying the Nigerian fashion narrative on local and international stages.

Michael has consistently worked to put African fashion’s real place on the world stage. He has profiled those designers who work with tradition and innovation, covered shows for sustainable practices, and duly reported events such as Fashion Finest Africa’s Epic Show, which stands for creativity with cultural consciousness. Michael’s words grab attention, but his creativity does not stop on the page. In August 2024, he served as a creative director for The Guardian Nigeria’s fashion shoots, including the main cover shoot with celebrated actor Sambasa Nzeribe. He also directed the fashion short film at the Abuja Fashion Festival 2023. Across these different roles, from concept development to wardrobe selection to set direction, he handled things expertly. His style of journalism blends storytelling with activism, creating a platform from which African fashion would not just be seen but understood and appreciated.
