The exit of former Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been described as a painful development by party stalwarts in the state. Alhaji Yusuf Dingyadi, Senior Special Assistant to the PDP National Chairman, expressed these sentiments during a press briefing in Sokoto on Tuesday.

Dingyadi acknowledged Bafarawa’s significant contributions to the growth and survival of the PDP, emphasizing that his departure is not something to celebrate.

“This is a painful development in our political journey under the leadership of Amb. Iliya Damagum. The party is currently focused on fostering unity, cohesion, and progress among its supporters nationwide,” Dingyadi stated.

He further noted that the PDP remains committed to reconciliation and forgiveness, stressing that setbacks like this could hinder the party’s unity and development.

“Even though he decided to leave without any misunderstanding or offense, the PDP will continue to pursue his return, as his contributions remain valuable to our future success. Political parties are like barracks—while some members leave, others join,” Dingyadi added.

Bafarawa’s Resignation

Bafarawa formally resigned from the PDP to focus on his newly founded platform, the Northern Star Youths Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI). The initiative, launched at Arewa House, Kaduna, is aimed at promoting youth entrepreneurship and empowerment.

In a resignation letter addressed to the PDP National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagum, dated January 8, 2025, and received on January 13, 2025, Bafarawa explained his decision to step aside.

“To avoid a conflict of interest between my PDP membership and my leadership of the Northern Youths Empowerment Initiative, I have chosen to resign. I will now focus my attention on creating awareness for youth entrepreneurship and empowerment to reduce redundancy and promote self-reliance,” Bafarawa wrote.

He concluded the letter by wishing the PDP success in its future endeavors and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the party’s development as a loyal member.

Until his resignation, Bafarawa was a formidable figure in the PDP. He played a critical role in supporting Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s re-election campaign in 2019, despite parting ways with his former political mentor and godfather, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (Sarkin Yamman Sokoto).

Bafarawa’s departure marks a significant shift in Sokoto’s political landscape, with party members reflecting on his legacy and its impact on the state’s PDP structure.
