Beyond resolutions: Growth advocate, Yemi Johnson x-rays Bezos-inspired method to achieving life-changing goals

Resolutions aren’t limited to the start of a new year; they’re powerful tools for life transformation, according to personal growth advocate Yemi Johnson.

While many focus on micro-habits or socially accepted goals, Johnson emphasises aligning resolutions with one’s long-term vision and true desires.

In a recent chat with Vanguard, he explained that, “Understanding why you want to make changes is critical”.

He critiqued common practices like waking up early or quitting bad habits, noting that such changes often lack alignment with personal growth. Instead, she advocates for clarity of purpose and a forward-looking approach to decision-making.

Drawing inspiration from Jeff Bezos’ “regret minimization framework,” Johnson proposes a refined version: the “future regret” method. He encourages individuals to imagine their lives 5–10 years into the future. If the envisioned reality reflects dissatisfaction or missed opportunities, it’s a signal to act now.

His process begins with envisioning the life one desires—not in terms of material possessions but feelings of fulfillment and accomplishment. She advises listing potential regrets and using them as a guide for actionable goals. “Your list of regrets becomes your roadmap,” Johnson explains, emphasising that reflecting on the past should serve as a catalyst for future change.

To ensure progress, Johnson recommended treating each goal like a project. Breaking them into smaller, manageable tasks and scheduling time for each step is key. For example, aspiring to study abroad might involve daily GMAT preparation, weekly research on scholarships, and consistent savings for application fees.

He cautions that typical resolutions—like waking up earlier or eliminating distractions—are insufficient unless they contribute to larger, meaningful objectives. Johnson’s approach encourages individuals to annually reassess and prioritize their goals to stay on track toward their ideal future.

“Age or past mistakes don’t define your potential,” Johnson concluded. “It’s never too late to create a life you’ll look back on with pride.”

This mindset offers a powerful alternative for those seeking transformative change—anytime, not just at the start of a new year.
