The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa, has described the second edition of the African Military Games (AMGA) 2024 as a shining example of how sports can serve as a bridge of unity among regional and sub-regional countries to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

General Musa, who was the Chief Host of the games, made this statement during his closing remarks, emphasizing that “These games go beyond mere competition.” He continued, “The Games remind us of the collective strength of Africa. When we come together in a world facing diverse security challenges, it is crucial that we as military forces continue to find innovative ways to foster cooperation and mutual understanding.”

The CDS also urged the National Sports Commission to prioritize sports development in Nigeria to ensure the country competes effectively at the continental level. He praised the event, highlighting that no casualties were recorded, a testament to the fitness, preparedness, and professionalism of the athletes. This outcome, he noted, underscores the discipline and training that define military institutions across Africa.

He congratulated all the teams that participated, saying, “While the medals and trophies represent the pinnacle of achievement, I must emphasize that in these games, irrespective of ranking or position, every team is a winner. The courage, skill, and sportsmanship exhibited on the fields, tracks, and courts have been nothing short of inspiring.”

General Musa concluded, “Victory is not just about crossing the finish line first, but about embodying the values of unity and resilience.” He commended every participant for their commitment to excellence and expressed gratitude to the organizing committee, volunteers, and all personnel who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the event’s success. He said, “Your meticulous planning and execution have not only brought pride to Nigeria, but also to the continent as a whole.”

As the event concluded, General Musa encouraged participants to carry forward the lessons of unity and friendship that the games have instilled. “May we continue to work together as a collective force for a safer and more prosperous Nigeria,” he added.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, praised the vision and leadership of CDS General Christopher Musa and OSMA President Maj.-Gen. Abdullahi Maikano for their dedication in making the 2024 edition of the African Military Games a success. He emphasized that the spirit of collaboration demonstrated in this edition of the games, held 22 years after the inaugural event, is a powerful reminder of what Africa can achieve when united—not just as soldiers, but as guardians of a shared destiny.

“Over these exciting years of brotherhood and sisterhood, all participants have demonstrated the true essence of unity and camaraderie that transcends borders and strengthens the ties that bind us as one great African family,” Vice President Shettima said.

He also noted that the platform provided an extraordinary opportunity to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions to shared challenges. “Supporting activities like these are not just recreational; they are essential for achieving optimal physical, mental, and emotional well-being,” he added.

Shettima reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to addressing security threats and violent crimes in Nigeria and across the continent, stressing that fostering ties among nations and enhancing camaraderie among troops are key to achieving peace and stability.
