In a bid to equip educators with the knowledge and practical tools to identify and support students and colleagues facing mental health challenges, Dora-Care Behavioral Foundation in Partnership with Nigeria Red Cross Society, Ikorodu branch, organised a free mental health first aid for educators in Lagos, Nigeria.
The event which was held at Ipakodo Senior Grammar School, featured experts who delved into critical topics surrounding educator mental health, early recognition of mental health issues, and strategies for creating supportive classroom environments.
It featured an engaging panel discussion with experts offering valuable insights into the mental health challenges faced by educators and the importance of creating supportive environments for them. The panelists discussed various aspects of educator well-being, mental health, and support strategies.
Speaking, the founder of Dora-Care Behavioral Foundation, Feyikemi Akinyelure, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, saying that educators are often the first to notice signs of mental health challenges in students, it is essential to provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively respond.
This training was organised to empower educators to create safer, more inclusive classrooms, helping both educators and students thrive emotionally. “We believe early intervention can make a lasting difference in the mental well-being of our children and colleagues.”
The event was an opportunity for educators to enhance their understanding of mental health issues and develop practical skills to foster a supportive learning environment. Adding that, it was an avenue for educators to gain the tools needed to identify and address mental health concerns early, in order to create a healthier and more productive classroom for both students and educators.
In his keynote address, Red Cross Divisional Coordinator, Mr. G.O. Fadare, who spoke on, “Introduction to Mental Health First Aid for Educators: Program Overview and Impact” provides a comprehensive overview of the Mental Health First Aid for Educators program, detailing its objectives and structure.
Fadare explained the pre and post-assessment framework, designed to measure the effectiveness of the training in enhancing educators’ knowledge, attitudes, and confidence in addressing mental health concerns.
Also, a medical expert, Dr. Olanrewaju Osho, in his presentation: “Recognizing Early Warning Signs of Mental Health Issues in Students and Educators”, addressed the early warning signs of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, and trauma, both in students and educators. He will provide practical guidance on how to identify these signs and respond effectively. Dr. Osho will also discuss common barriers to early recognition of mental health issues and stress the critical importance of timely intervention to prevent further escalation.
Meanwhile, Occupational Therapist, Mr. Lucky Jet, who spoke on, “Creating a Supportive Classroom Environment for Mental Wellness”, explored strategies for fostering a positive, supportive classroom environment that nurtures mental well-being.
He highlighted the importance of building strong, empathetic relationships with students, providing emotional support, and accommodating diverse learning needs. He also introduced practices and stress-reduction techniques that educators can integrate into their classrooms to improve focus and reduce anxiety.
