Dr. Chideraa Walter Ndubuisi, a renowned Nigerian medical doctor and environmental health expert at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, embodies the principle that excellence is not just a goal, but a way of life.

Growing up in a middle-income Nigerian household where excellence was the watchword, Dr. Ndubuisi learned early that success comes through unwavering dedication and consistent hard work. This foundational value system, instilled by his family, would shape his approach to every endeavor throughout his distinguished career.

“Excellence wasn’t just encouraged in our home – it was expected,” reflects Dr. Ndubuisi. “This mindset of always striving for the highest standards has been the driving force behind every step of my journey.”

His medical education at the University of Maiduguri proved to be a transformative experience, shaped by the mentorship of distinguished faculty members who left an indelible mark on his professional development. Under the guidance of Professor Omotola in Community Medicine, Dr. Ndubuisi developed a deep appreciation for public health and its impact on communities. Similarly, Professor Nggada’s expertise in Pathology provided him with crucial insights into disease processes and scientific investigation that would later prove invaluable in his environmental health research.

“The mentorship I received at the University of Maiduguri, particularly from Professor Omotola and Professor Nggada, was instrumental in shaping my approach to medicine and public health,” Dr. Ndubuisi acknowledges. “Their dedication to excellence and comprehensive understanding of their respective fields set a standard that I continue to aspire to in my current work.”

After completing his medical degree, he undertook a one-year internship at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. His exceptional interpersonal skills and dedication earned him the “Mr. Personality” award, highlighting his ability to connect with patients and colleagues alike.

Following his internship, Dr. Ndubuisi completed his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Edwin Clark University, where he worked at the university clinic. During this time, he led several impactful community engagement initiatives within the Burutu Local Government Area, demonstrating his commitment to public health at the grassroots level.

Driven by a passion for women’s health, Dr. Ndubuisi pursued and successfully passed his primary examinations in Obstetrics and Gynecology. However, his growing interest in broader public health issues soon led him to pivot towards environmental health, recognizing the profound impact of environmental factors on community wellbeing.

Today, Dr. Ndubuisi stands at the forefront of environmental health research, particularly in the field of microplastic pollution. As a principal researcher at UNC Charlotte, he leads pioneering work on microplastic pollution and brominated flame retardants in wastewater. His research employs sophisticated molecular biochemical techniques to assess contaminant levels and develop innovative mitigation strategies.

Dr. Ndubuisi’s influential work recently secured substantial funding from the NC SEA GRANT and WRRI NC Water Resources Research Institute for his groundbreaking project, “Assessment and Mitigation of Microplastic Pollution in Treated Wastewater and Biosolids: A Focus on Primary and Secondary Solids.” This research is revolutionizing our understanding of microplastic contamination in water systems.

“Microplastics represent one of the most pressing environmental and health challenges of our era,” says Dr. Ndubuisi. “Our research is developing revolutionary strategies to identify, quantify, and eliminate these contaminants from water treatment processes, potentially transforming global water management practices.”

His expertise has garnered international recognition, leading to his participation in high-level policy discussions. Dr. Ndubuisi was recently invited as a distinguished panelist at the Geneva Environment Network’s launch and panel discussion on “Analysis of Governments’ Authority to Mitigate Micro and Nanoplastic Releases,” a crucial event informing the global plastics treaty negotiations.

Building on this, Dr. Ndubuisi is now part of an elite team of experts drafting concept notes for the upcoming fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. This high-profile event, scheduled to take place in Busan, South Korea, underscores Dr. Ndubuisi’s significant role in shaping global environmental policy.

As one of only ten Charlotte Equity Fellows with the Community Building Initiative, Dr. Ndubuisi is also leading efforts to address environmental justice issues, demonstrating his commitment to translating scientific expertise into meaningful societal impact.

“The intricate relationship between environmental contamination, public health, and social equity requires sophisticated, multifaceted solutions,” Dr. Ndubuisi explains. “By understanding the complex mechanisms through which microplastics and other pollutants affect human health and communities, we’re developing comprehensive strategies to protect public health and promote environmental justice on a global scale.”

Dr. Ndubuisi’s research findings and policy recommendations have been presented at numerous international conferences and are actively shaping global policies on water treatment and environmental protection. His work exemplifies the crucial role of interdisciplinary expertise in addressing complex environmental challenges.

His unique ability to synthesize medical knowledge, environmental science, and public health policy has established him as a visionary leader in the field. From his early days in a home where excellence was paramount, through his formative years at the University of Maiduguri under the mentorship of distinguished professors, to his current position as a global authority on microplastic pollution, Dr. Ndubuisi’s journey illustrates the power of maintaining high standards and the importance of addressing emerging public health challenges.

As environmental concerns continue to mount worldwide, Dr. Ndubuisi’s work stands as a beacon of innovation and expertise, demonstrating how rigorous scientific research can be effectively translated into practical solutions for global environmental challenges. His leadership in this critical field continues to drive progress toward a more sustainable and healthier future for all.
