Sunday Nwafor: Welcome, Martins and Joshua! To kick off our conversation today, could you tell us a bit about Dinesurf?
Martins Udotai: Thank you for having us, Sunday. Dinesurf (www.dinesurf.com) is a platform designed to revolutionize how restaurants are discovered and how reservations are made, particularly in Africa. Dinesurf features components tailored for both diners and restaurant owners, aiming to maximize customer satisfaction and streamline business operations for restaurants. For diners, Dinesurf provides a fast, user-friendly interface to discover new dining spots, learn about their offerings, and book a table in just 90 seconds. It’s all about enhancing the dining experience by making it more accessible and personalized.
Joshua Udotai: And for restaurant owners, Dinesurf acts as a crucial tool in managing their online presence and customer relationships more effectively. We offer features that help these establishments understand their customers better, manage peak times efficiently, and build lasting relationships through improved service quality. Our goal is to make technology work for the hospitality industry in ways that are transformative yet intuitive.
Sunday Nwafor: From my understanding, you are siblings. It’s quite inspiring to see brothers working together on such a dynamic project. What motivated you, Martins and Joshua, to build Dinesurf together?
Martins Udotai: Growing up, Joshua and I were always surrounded by the bustling energy of kitchens and dining rooms. Our grandparents were chefs and restaurateurs, which gave us a firsthand look at the joys and challenges of the restaurant business. Their dedication to cooking and hospitality not only inspired our love for food but also instilled a deep respect for the hard work that goes into providing exceptional dining experiences.
Joshua Udotai: Exactly, and with Dinesurf, we wanted to harness that passion and channel it into a platform that supports restaurant owners in today’s digital world. We saw an opportunity to make a significant impact by making it simpler for restaurants to manage their online bookings and interactions with customers. It’s our way of enhancing the legacy our grandparents left us, by merging our love for technology with our family’s heritage in hospitality.
Sunday Nwafor: That’s a wonderful tribute to your family’s legacy. It’s clear that Dinesurf is more than just a business for you both; it’s a continuation of a cherished family tradition. Thank you for sharing that with us. Can you tell us about your backgrounds and how they contributed to founding Dinesurf? Joshua, can you start?
Joshua Udotai: Sure. As a bachelor degree holder in computer science, I’ve geared my career towards the intersection of advanced technology and practical applications. My role as CTO at Dinesurf leverages my expertise in artificial intelligence and full-stack development, particularly with Django and React frameworks. I’ve been pivotal in developing complex algorithms and deploying machine learning models, experiences that have equipped me to create a platform that anticipates and meets the evolving needs of the dynamic restaurant industry. These technical skills have been essential in building Dinesurf’s sophisticated platform, ensuring it is both innovative and scalable.
Martins Udotai: And as CEO, my background in mechanical engineering at NYU gave me a solid base for critical thinking and problem-solving, which are key for driving any technology-driven business forward. While my studies were centered on engineering, I actively participated in entrepreneurship initiatives at NYU, where I co-founded a startup called Siteat that offered valuable insights into the food industry. This experience was crucial as it allowed me to blend my technical expertise with practical entrepreneurial skills, paving the way for the creation of Dinesurf. My role now involves steering our company’s vision and ensuring that our technological innovations continue to create meaningful impacts in the hospitality sector.
Sunday Nwafor: That’s a strong foundation, and really impressive. Joshua, with your expertise in AI, how have you tailored Dinesurf to enhance user experiences?
Joshua Udotai: We’ve incorporated AI to personalize the dining experience significantly. For instance, our platform uses machine learning algorithms to recommend restaurants based on user preferences and past dining habits. This not only makes our platform more intuitive but also helps our restaurant partners better understand and serve their customers.
Sunday Nwafor: Martins, what challenges did you face in the early stages of Dinesurf, and how did your engineering expertise help you overcome them?
Martins Udotai: Integrating complex reservation systems with a user-friendly interface was a significant challenge. My engineering approach helped systematically address these issues, ensuring our platform was robust enough to handle real-time bookings and data management without compromising on speed or user experience.
Sunday Nwafor: Turning to market expansion, Martins, can you discuss any plans to scale Dinesurf into the US market?
Martins Udotai: Certainly, we are actively setting the stage for entering the US market, as Dinesurf has been incorporated in the United States, and we are supported by investments from government entities, private investors, and earnings from startup competitions. These resources are crucial for adapting our platform to meet local market demands and regulatory requirements in the US.
Sunday Nwafor: Joshua, as Dinesurf’s CTO, could you share what new features restaurants and customers can look forward to in the coming months on the Dinesurf platform?
Joshua Udotai: Absolutely. We’re excited to roll out several new features soon. We’ll be enhancing our AI capabilities to offer more personalized restaurant recommendations based on users’ dining preferences and history. We’re also introducing tools for restaurants to better understand their customers through advanced data analytics. This will help them tailor their services and offerings more effectively. Additionally, we’re working on social media integrations to make sharing dining experiences effortless. These updates are all about improving the user experience and helping restaurants connect more deeply with their customers.
Sunday Nwafor: Martins, could you share how Dinesurf has evolved under your leadership and the milestones you’ve achieved?
Martins Udotai: Since its inception, Dinesurf has grown significantly, marking major milestones such as integrating AI to analyze customer preferences and launching a customer relationship management tool for restaurants. These innovations have not only set us apart from competitors but have also solidified our market leadership in Africa. Dinesurf has over 600 restaurants in its clientele across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and Egypt.
Sunday Nwafor: Finally, for both of you, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs interested in product innovation?
Martins Udotai: My advice would be to deeply understand the market and continuously adapt your product based on user feedback. Innovation is a never-ending process of learning and evolving.
Joshua Udotai: And I’d add, always be ready to leverage your unique skills to solve real-world problems. Don’t shy away from challenging the status quo and think outside the box, as that’s where true innovation happens.
Sunday Nwafor: Thank you, Martins and Joshua, for sharing your insights and the journey of Dinesurf. We look forward to seeing how it transforms dining experiences across Africa and soon, globally.
Martins Udotai: Thank you for having us, it’s been a pleasure discussing Dinesurf with you.
Joshua Udotai: Thank you! It’s been great discussing our passion for Dinesurf and how we plan to innovate further.
