•As seven persons drown in 48hrs in Lagos
The body of one of the passengers who was flung into the lagoon during an auto crash on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, Wednesday, has been recovered.
This is just as seven persons were reported to have drowned between Wednesday, March 10 2024 and Thursday, March 11,2024, in Lagos.
Recall that an unidentified driver of a 20- seater commercial bus with number plate, FKJ 872 YA, was heading inwards Lagos Island, when tragedy struck, at the Adeniyi Adele end of the bridge, as the bus suddenly veered off his lane and hit the bridge rail. The impact of the hit flung two passengers, a male and a female, into the lagoon while other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The recovery of one of the bodies was announced by the South West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA Mr Ibrahim Farinloye.
He disclosed that the recovered body by the Marine Police was that of the male passenger, adding that efforts were still on to recover the female passenger’s .
Meanwhile , the Lagos State Police Command disclosed that it recorded additional deaths of five persons by drowning, thereby increasing the death toll of drowned Lagosians to seven, in 24 hours, this week.
One of the incidents according to the Police, occurred the same day with the Third Mainland bridge’s.
In this case a 16-year-old boy identified as Fawad Adeyemi, drowned in a hotel’s swimming pool in Marina area of Lagos. The teenager was said to have gone to the hotel at about 4pm on Wednesday, April 10,2024, to swim when he met his unexpected end.
Though he was said to have been rescued and taken to General Hospital, Lagos Island for medical treatment, but he was confirmed dead by the doctor there.
The same Wednesday again, two boys with undisclosed identities, reportedly drowned while swimming in the pool of a Guest House located in Mushin area of the state. The incident as gathered, happened at about 7.30pm.
On Thursday, April 11, 2024, a 20- year- old identified as Hakeem Fawas was reportedly swimming with his friends at the Ibeshe Beach, Lagos, when he drowned. Time was 5.25pm.
Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hudenyin who confirmed all the incidents said the scenes were visited by the respective policemen under whose jurisdictions they occurred.
