The Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) has called on electoral stakeholders, especially the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure credible and peaceful rerun elections on Saturday nationwide.

The Chairman of CLO in Anambra, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, made the call on Friday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the need for free and fair rerun elections acceptable to all stakeholders.

Ezekwueme also called on INEC to redeem itself and restore citizens’ confidence, trust and hope in the electoral system by conducting a credible and generally acceptable election by contestants, citizens and the international community.

According to him, it is very unfortunate and despicable that the majority of Nigerians today believe that their votes never count hence voting for them is not necessary.

“INEC, political parties, politicians, traditional, religious, trade unions and civil society organizations’ leaders should swing into action and educate their subjects and citizens to participate actively in the electoral process.

“They should encourage them to vote always with their conscience and conviction which only means to renew the mandate of good leaders and vote out corrupt, inept, unpatriotic and selfish leaders,” he said.

The CLO boss urged the electorate involved in the elections to come out en masse and vote massively for the candidates of their choice, protect and defend their votes.

“Parents and guardians should counsel their children not to allow themselves to be used as thugs or ballot box snatchers.

“We must collectively play the game according to the rules so that the outcome will reflect the wishes and aspirations of the majority of the electorate,” he said.
