No fewer than 12 persons have lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident at Ngido village along the busy Kastina-Ala – Zaki Biam road in Kastina-Ala Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue State.
An eyewitness disclosed that the fatal accident, which occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and involved two vehicles, a commercial Golf car with nine passengers, including a female child, and a private Nissan car with three occupants, was the second on the same spot in recent time.
According to the sources, “the vehicles ran into each other in a head-on collision while one of them was trying to avoid a pothole right at the spot of the accident.
“Eight of the passengers in both vehicles died at the spot of the accident, while four others who were rushed to the hospital died moments later.”
The sources further informed us that “not too long ago, a similar accident occured at the same spot while one of the drivers was also trying to avoid the same pothole.
“The resultant accident was also a head-on collision involving the two cars, luckily, no life was lost in the crash, but people sustained serious injuries.”
Confirming the development, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Steve Ayodele, blamed it on overspeeding.
He said, “It was a head-on collision; one of the vehicles was trying to avoid a pothole and ram into an oncoming vehicle. I guess it was as a result of overspeeding; otherwise, they would have been able to manoveur their way.”
