Nigeria, a country plagued by erratic electricity supply, blackouts, and outdated infrastructure, could find a solution to its energy woes in harnessing the power of the sun, says clean energy expert Dr. Kingsley Ukoba.
Despite various initiatives and investments, challenges such as inefficiencies, fuel shortages, and payment issues persist, underscoring the urgent need for stable electricity to foster economic and social development.

In an interview, Dr. Ukoba emphasized the transformative potential of solar energy, stating that “the sun holds the key to unlocking the unstable power supply rocking Nigeria if properly harnessed.”
He highlighted Nigeria’s immense solar photovoltaic power potential, particularly in regions with intensive sunshine, presenting an opportunity to generate clean and affordable electricity for homes and industries.
Dr. Ukoba unveiled a groundbreaking solar cell technology developed by his team, which utilizes heterojunction metal oxides materials and nanotechnology to enhance solar energy conversion efficiency, even in low light conditions.
This innovation promises to be more efficient and cost-effective compared to traditional silicon-based solar cells, offering a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s energy challenges.
Addressing concerns about the affordability and scalability of solar technology in Nigeria, Dr. Ukoba explained that while solar panels are increasingly being adopted, the high cost and limited local manufacturing capacity remain barriers to widespread deployment.
However, he expressed optimism that his alternate solar cell technology, with its lower electricity demand for fabrication, could drive down costs and facilitate broader adoption for both domestic and industrial applications.
Dr. Ukoba stressed the importance of collaboration with the Nigerian government to realize the full potential of this technology on a national scale.
He called for government support in the form of funding, incentives, streamlined regulatory processes, and investment in research and development to accelerate the deployment of clean energy solutions.
Looking ahead, Dr. Ukoba expressed confidence in the positive impact of his technology on Nigeria’s energy sector, envisioning a brighter and more sustainable future for the country.
With the right partnerships and support, he believes that harnessing solar power could pave the way for a reliable and accessible electricity supply, driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.
