Omodolapo Ogunsola drives legacy through strategic communications

By Katherine Ronwa

In today’s world, where leaders are often judged as much by their stories as by their actions, capturing history with clarity, accuracy, and impact has become an essential task. Few people understand this better than Omodolapo Eunice Ogunsola, Communications Officer & Project Coordinator, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), whose strategic communication expertise has become the backbone of the Director General’s highly anticipated Autobiography Project, titled “Leadership in African Agriculture”. With her ability to weave together narratives, manage relationships, and deliver professional media outputs, Ogunsola is not just documenting a life of leadership—she is amplifying a legacy that will inspire generations to come.

Since 2020, Ogunsola embarked on the development, implementation, and coordination of a comprehensive communication and knowledge management strategy specifically designed for the legacy presentation of IITA DG, Dr Nteranya Sanginga. This is not merely about collecting facts or compiling memories; it is about strategically aligning the autobiography with the Director General’s vision and the expectations of diverse audiences. Ogunsola’s strategy ensures that the project is cohesive, engaging, and positioned to achieve maximum impact, both within the institution and in the broader public space.

During the Book Launch on 25 November 2022, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank and Chief Reviewer at the occasion, praised Ogunsola’s contribution to shaping legacies, building trust, and inspiring action.

One of her key contributions is research—facilitating in-depth investigations into the subject’s background, career, leadership journey, and achievements. Through detailed interviews, archival studies, and analysis of historical articles, she creates the foundation upon which the autobiography rests. Her work ensures accuracy, credibility, and richness, transforming the project from a mere collection of stories into a powerful testimony of leadership and development impact. This kind of research demands patience, rigor, and sensitivity, qualities that Ogunsola brings in abundance.

Equally critical is her role in managing relationships and knowledge exchange among project contributors. Projects of this magnitude bring together diverse stakeholders, each with their own perspectives, experiences, and expectations. By engaging in dialogue, using feedback mechanisms, and fostering collaboration, Ogunsola ensures that every contributor feels heard and valued. This not only strengthens the project’s credibility but also makes it a collective endeavor rather than a solitary narrative. Her management style reflects her broader philosophy: communication is as much about listening as it is about speaking.

Ogunsola’s leadership shines in media production. She has coordinated and produced web, audio-visual, and print media materials in close collaboration with professionals in the communications field. These outputs serve as complementary pieces to the autobiography, extending its reach and engaging audiences in innovative ways. From compelling videos to striking visual content, she ensures that the message of the Director General’s leadership journey is accessible to diverse audiences in the formats that resonate most with them.

The scope of her work extends to documentary production, where she has facilitated the creation of four major documentaries focusing on the Director General’s leadership and the impact of his development initiatives. These documentaries, available in both print and audio-visual formats, provide tangible evidence of the difference that visionary leadership makes in the lives of target groups. Through these productions, Ogunsola helps translate abstract achievements into human-centered stories that inspire and motivate.

Her work also positions her as a vital liaison between the Director General and national and international media. By managing media relationships, responding to inquiries, and facilitating access to accurate information, Ogunsola protects and enhances the reputation of both the DG and the institution. In an era where miscommunication can spread as quickly as fact, her role is vital in ensuring that the narrative remains accurate, positive, and impactful.

Beyond her direct contributions to the project, Ogunsola is deeply committed to capacity development. She has invested in building the competence of communication interns, offering them mentorship, guidance, and exposure to high-level projects. By providing leadership to her communication and media assistants at events, she not only ensures the seamless delivery of project tasks but also grooms the next generation of communication professionals. Her leadership creates ripple effects that extend far beyond the immediate project.

Internally, she organizes communication among team members and ensures that meeting reports are presented with clarity and timeliness. This reinforces efficiency, accountability, and collaboration within the project team. By ensuring that internal communication is as effective as external messaging, Ogunsola demonstrates her holistic approach to communication management.

Her work on the Director General’s Autobiography Project combines strategic foresight, rigorous research, professional media production, and leadership development into a single, powerful effort.

Ultimately, her role underscores the fact that history is best written by those who understand the delicate balance between truth and impact, between facts and inspiration. Ogunsola is ensuring that the autobiography does not merely recount the Director General’s life but positions it as a beacon of leadership and development excellence for Africa and the world. Through her work, she amplifies a legacy, strengthens an institution, and demonstrates the indispensable role of strategic communication in shaping narratives that matter.
