My mum showed me the creative world – IZZ

My mum showed me the creative world – IZZ

By Emmanuel Elebeke

Isabelle Tolefe, popularly known as IZZ, is a half French, half Nigerian Musician born in Manchester, the United Kingdom.

As a young lass still figuring out where she wants to go musically, IZZ has two songs in her kitten , “Vibe you” and “Essence” that really encapsulate who IZZ was when she made those songs.

Connection to culture has been a huge part of her life and has influenced it in every facet. Izz said she was fortunate enough to travel from a young age and believed that made her super curious and interested in learning about music because it she found it so different all over the world.

IZZ said before she moved to a coastal city in Australia called Perth, her Mum showed her the creative world. As early as age of 3, she was in dancing and acting classes. But she attested that it was her brother who really propelled her and gave her the confidence to sing.

‘‘From the age of 14, we would write songs together on the way to school, then one thing led to another and he was all of a sudden my manager!’’

But for IZZ, her Nigerian and UK roots was the driving force behind her love for music.

‘‘I just feel like the music culture is so rich in both countries and so much talent comes out of there. Nowhere in the world does music like that. All my new music will reflect the music I love to listen to.’’

Speaking on her future music, she said, ‘‘I would love to tap into my French roots with my music side because I think what they’re doing is something super special as well. I have been really trying to sit back and work on my craft.

‘‘I’m not someone that likes to rush something just to get traction. My two songs, “Vibe you” and “Essence” really encapsulate who I was when I made those songs – I was still really young and only just figuring out where I wanted to go musically. I’m really excited to show people what I’ve been working on and the evolution of my sound.’’

Her most recent work is the song called Essence. It’s about The essence of life, it is perpetual and continual growth, love, family and loyalty. ‘‘Truly living in the moment, and to take risks! I think even though I wrote the song years ago – the message is still true now,’’ she added.

Her first release “vibe you” probably would have made people know about her, especially in Perth as it’s such a small place, even though, she hadn’t told anyone she was doing music and then bam, a song. ‘‘It was such a fun process, a huge learning experience too.’’

IZZ, who is not satisfied with the only 2 songs officially dropped, said fun projects are coming. ‘I’m so excited for this new chapter! Some really fun projects are coming up which I’ll be able to finally show!

For her, her greatest challenge is finding likeminded people to work with, considering that, Perth, her current place of resident is a small coastal city with not a lot of people that listen to afro and UK style beats.

‘‘So it can be hard to find people on the same vibe as you. I would say – expect something different and unexpected! There will be a fusion of genres and styles as well as different techniques of producing and sound!”
