#Electionday: Gowon lauds Nigerians, INEC

ABUJA – Former Head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), yesterday commended Nigerians and the for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the peaceful and smooth conduct of the elections.

Gowon who made the commendation while monitoring the Presidential and National Assembly elections at Polling Unit, 027 Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja said the polls were peaceful in all the places he visited in the nation’s capital.

He said, “In some places it has been smooth, in some places where the number is overwhelming, some persons are still trying to vote.”

He however lamented that in some places he went to observe the exercise, the card reader malfunctioned.

“There are some issues around the use of card reader. But otherwise, so far, so good. Nigerians are making me feel proud at least around the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. I hope this is so all over,” he added.

Counting started at the Polling Unit, at about 3: 25 pm, as party loyalists, local and international monitors observed the exercise.

The Commonwealth Observer Group led by Jakaya Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania and the African Union Observers were on ground during sorting and counting of ballot.
